UK Immigration Rules 2026: Major Changes Coming in October and November

The UK is introducing a new set of changes to its Immigration Rules, with different measures coming into effect between October and December 2026.

The latest Statement of Changes, published by the UK Home Office on 3 September 2026, covers areas including Skilled Worker visas, Student visas, visitor activities, religious workers, domestic-abuse protections, the EU Settlement Scheme and participation in the Erasmus+ program.

Importantly, these changes do not all take effect on the same date. Some begin on 8 October 2026, while others take effect on 29 October, 30 November and 9 December.

For people planning to study, work or travel to the UK, understanding the exact implementation date is therefore important.

UK Immigration Changes: Important Dates to Remember

The latest changes affect several different immigration routes and activities. The new rules have several implementation dates.

Among the changes announced and the expected dates are:

  1. New protections for certain Skilled Workers who are recognized victims of modern slavery
  2.  New immigration provisions connected to the UK’s participation in Erasmus+
  3.  Changes to the financial requirement for some Student visa applicants
  4.  Changes affecting Ministers of Religion and Religious Workers
  5.  Changes to the Victim of Domestic Abuse route
  6.  Changes to parts of the EU Settlement Scheme
  7.  Further changes to visitor activities, including certain permitted Erasmus+ activities
  8.  Closure of remaining provisions connected to the Start-up route
Change Who may be affected Effective date
Erasmus+ immigration provisions Eligible participants Oct. 8
Skilled Worker protection changes Certain recognised victims of exploitation Oct. 8
Family/settlement provisions Relevant applicants Oct. 8
Religious worker changes Ministers/religious workers Oct. 29
Student financial requirement changes Student visa applicants Nov. 30
EU Settlement Scheme changes Relevant applicants Dec. 9

The Home Office also states that where certain applications were made before the relevant implementation date, they will generally be decided under the Immigration Rules in force immediately before the change. The exact transitional arrangements vary by provision.

This is why applicants should check the rules that apply to the date and type of application they are making.

UK Skilled Worker Visa Changes

One of the changes taking effect on 8 October 2026 concerns Skilled Workers who have been referred to the UK’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM) and have received a positive Conclusive Grounds decision in relation to modern slavery.

Under the new rule, certain eligible Skilled Workers will be able to have their work conditions amended so they can undertake other work, including self-employment and voluntary work.

There is an exception for work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach.

Who Does This Skilled Worker Change Affect?

This is not a general change allowing every Skilled Worker to work in any job.

It applies to   a specific group of Skilled Workers who:

  • Have been referred into the National Referral Mechanism;
  • Have received a positive Conclusive Grounds decision; and
  • Received that decision during their most recent period of immigration permission.

Eligible workers may then have their existing work conditions changed under the new rule.

This distinction is important because the change is designed for a particular protection situation rather than being a general relaxation of Skilled Worker requirements.

UK Student Visa Changes in 2026

There are also changes affecting Student visa applicants.

Some of the student-related changes take effect on 8 October 2026, particularly those connected with Erasmus+.

Another change affecting the financial requirement for Student visas takes effect on 30 November 2026.

How Much Money Will Students Need to Show?

From 30 November 2026, the required monthly maintenance funds will increase:

  • £1,570 per month for students studying in London
  • £1,203 per month for students studying outside London

These replace the previous figures of £1,529 and £1,171 respectively.

The change matters because international students applying after the relevant implementation date may need to demonstrate that they have sufficient funds under the updated requirement.

Students should therefore check the financial evidence requirements applicable to their application before submitting a visa application.

UK and Erasmus+ Immigration Changes

One of the newer areas covered by the Immigration Rules is the UK’s participation in the Erasmus+ program.

The changes create specific immigration provisions for eligible Erasmus+ participants coming to the UK.

From 8 October 2026, eligible participants will be able to undertake certain activities under the visitor and student rules where the relevant Erasmus+ requirements are met.

What Can Erasmus+ Participants Do?

The new visitor provisions include activities such as:

  • Training at a UK-based organization or educational institution
  • Certain traineeships
  • Job shadowing
  •  Skills-related activities
  •  Training or coaching assignments for eligible sports staff, coaches and volunteers
  •  Youth work activities under the Erasmus+ program

The activity must meet the relevant Erasmus+ and UK immigration requirements. It also cannot simply be used to fill a permanent job in a UK organization.

What Does This Mean for Students?

The Student route is also being amended to accommodate eligible Erasmus+ participants.

For example, certain Erasmus+ courses can qualify under provisions relating to the level of study, while work placements undertaken by qualifying Erasmus+ participants will be exempt from certain existing work-placement duration restrictions.

This means students participating through an eligible Erasmus+ arrangement should check the specific immigration route and conditions attached to their program.

Changes to UK Visitor Rules

The latest Immigration Rules also make several changes to permitted activities for visitors.

For example, visitors will be able to participate in certain skills competitions under the updated rules.

There are also changes affecting entertainment staff accompanying artists, entertainers or musicians to UK events, provided the relevant conditions are met.

The Erasmus+ provisions create additional activities for qualifying participants, including training, traineeships and job shadowing.

However, these changes should not be interpreted as giving ordinary visitors permission to take up regular employment in the UK.

The activity must fall within the permitted visitor rules and satisfy the applicable conditions.

UK Religious Worker and Minister of Religion Changes

Another group affected by the new rules is religious workers.

Changes to the T2 Minister of Religion and Temporary Work – Religious Worker routes will take effect on 29 October 2026.

Changes for Ministers of Religion

The updated rules clarify that the Minister of Religion route is intended for people undertaking key leading roles within faith-based organizations.

This can include ministers of religion, missionaries and other religious workers in mainly pastoral roles, as well as members of religious orders.

The rules also state that dependent partners and dependent children can apply under this route and that the T2 Minister of Religion route is a route to settlement.

The updated rules also provide more detail around roles that are mainly non-pastoral, including school teaching, media production, domestic work and administrative or clerical work.

Changes to the Religious Worker Route

The Temporary Work – Religious Worker route will also receive changes from 29 October.

The updated rules continue to allow eligible Religious Workers to stay in the UK for up to a maximum of two years.

Partners and children can apply as dependant under this route, while the Religious Worker route itself is not a route to settlement.

The rules also introduce specific requirements concerning maintenance and accommodation where a worker is not entitled to receive the National Minimum Wage for the sponsored role.

Changes to the Victim of Domestic Abuse Route

The UK is also changing the Victim of Domestic Abuse route.

From 8 October 2026, the rules will extend eligibility for settlement under this route to certain adult dependent children who meet the relevant requirements.

The Home Office said the change follows a High Court ruling in Northern Ireland and is intended to address the position of adult dependent children who may have experienced domestic abuse.

The updated rules also clarify eligibility requirements for people whose relationships have permanently broken down because of domestic abuse.

This is a specialist immigration route, so anyone considering it should check the detailed requirements rather than relying on a general summary.

Changes to the EU Settlement Scheme

The latest Immigration Rules also make amendments to the EU Settlement Scheme.

One of the changes takes effect on 9 December 2026.

The amendments include changes to how certain definitions and eligibility provisions are applied, including references concerning people who previously held limited leave under the EU Settlement Scheme.

These changes are mainly relevant to people already connected to the EU Settlement Scheme rather than new applicants coming to the UK for the first time.

What About Nigerians Applying for UK Visas?

For Nigerian readers, it is also important to distinguish these September 2026 Immigration Rules changes from the UK’s separate visa brake.

The current visa brake applies to Student visa applications made outside the UK by nationals of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan, and to Skilled Worker applications made outside the UK by Afghan nationals.

Nigeria is not included in the countries currently listed under the visa brake.

This does not mean Nigerian applicants automatically qualify for a UK visa. Applicants must still meet the requirements of the particular immigration route they are applying under.

Are UK Student and Work Visas Still Available?

Yes.

The latest changes do not close the UK’s Student or Skilled Worker routes.

However, applicants must meet the requirements that apply to their particular route, and some requirements are changing.

For example, the Student route will have higher maintenance-fund requirements from 30 November 2026, while certain Skilled Worker protections will change from 8 October.

Official Home Office statistics also show that sponsored study visa grants decreased in the year ending June 2026. Nigerian nationals nevertheless received 26,060 sponsored study visas in that period, representing 7% of all sponsored study visa grants to main applicants.

Therefore, people considering the UK should look at their specific eligibility and the latest rules rather than assuming that the UK has stopped accepting international students or workers.

What Should UK Visa Applicants Do Now?

1. Check the exact visa route

UK immigration rules differ between Student, Skilled Worker, Visitor, Religious Worker, family and other routes.

Do not assume that a change affecting one route automatically applies to another.

2. Pay attention to implementation dates

A policy announcement and the date a rule becomes effective are not always the same thing.

For the September 2026 changes, the main dates are 8 October, 29 October, 30 November and 9 December 2026.

3. Prepare your finances early if you are a student

Students planning to apply after 30 November should take the updated maintenance requirement into account when preparing their financial evidence.

4. Do not rely on social media headlines

A headline such as “UK bans work visas” or “UK stops student visas” can be misleading when the underlying rule applies only to a particular route or category.

Read the actual Immigration Rules or official Home Office guidance before making a major application decision.

5. Check transitional arrangements

If you are applying around the date a rule changes, check whether your application will be assessed under the previous or updated rules.

6. Be cautious with visa agents

No legitimate agent can guarantee that a UK visa application will be approved.

Applicants should verify the immigration route, understand the requirements and be cautious about anyone asking for money in exchange for guaranteed sponsorship or guaranteed visa approval.

Final Thoughts

The UK’s latest Immigration Rules changes introduce a number of targeted amendments rather than one single new visa system.

For most people planning to study or work in the UK, the most important thing is to understand which change applies to their route and when it takes effect.

The first major implementation date is 8 October 2026, followed by further changes on 29 October, 30 November and 9 December.

Students should pay particular attention to the updated financial requirements coming in November, while eligible Skilled Workers, Erasmus+ participants, religious workers and people using specialist protection or settlement routes should review the provisions relevant to their circumstances.

As immigration rules continue to change, applicants should always check the latest information from the UK Home Office before submitting an application.
